The Cellular Telephone – An American Tradition
There are currently over
141 million cellular telephone subscribers in the United States. The
cell phone has become as much a part of American culture as apple
pie and baseball, but where did the cellular telephone come from?
Back in the 1920’s the first idea of the cellular
phone was born in police cars with two-way radios. By the 1940’s
the mobile phone was being used by private citizens in their cars.
The first automobile phones were actually like a two-way radio but
had the ability to also connect to land line phones. So even then
it was possible to call home and find out what was for supper or what
time the game started.
Although car phones were possible in the 1940’s,
they were not within everyone’s reach, due to price and available
air space. But thanks to good old American know how and determination
to make things easier, the car phone was soon transformed into the
cellular telephone of today. Advanced technology and the opening up
of air space helped boost the industry into what it is today; almost
half the population of the United States using cell phones.
So, next time you are watching a game or having some
apple pie reach for your cellular telephone and know you are participating
in yet another great American tradition.
